Kanji Flip App Reviews

slick !

the clarity of this application makes it fun and easy to use. too many Kanji related learning products, including books, lack this kind of simplicity. highly recommended. in the second version, it would be ideal if the developer could include the romaji pronounciation of each Kanji, to correspond with the meaning (listed) of the Kanji... or, an audio translation option.

Really Helpful Kanji Tool

This is an amazing program, I think it is worth $40 in terms of helpfulness. Its bizarre, in 2 days I have memorized the Level 2 kanji (meanings, not readings), and its taken me much longer to pick up the spoken language (although I have hit a bit of a block on the first 60 Level 3 kanki...). Learning to read is much more difficult than speaking Japanese, but this will really really help. Thanks for adding the kana, looking forward to that too.

Wow!

Im learning Japanese right now and Im excited to use this program because it is so simple to use.

Excellent

Awesome program. Real value for your money. I cant wait to see example compounds within the cards and on my wish list would be an option to create a customized stack or two & separated hiragana/katagana stacks.

Great learning tool

Very useful tool to learn kanjis, easy to use and fun too! My only qualm is that Ive sometimes find the script a bit small and difficult to read, especially on the bus. 4 stars and a half!

Good for 3 bucks

Simple, clean & colourful flashcard interface. Would be nice to be able to earmark problem kanji or make own groups, lists or tests (ie: common verbs, adjectives, etc.). But for 3 bucks, cant complain.

Great, except...

...there are no options with Hiragana and Katakana. This app would be a much better learning tool if you could choose which characters are to appear. (e.g, which rows should be used, and whether or not to use alterations, and *a way to show only either hiragana or kana.*)

good and not so good

This is a great program for practicing kana, but not so good for learning. A good base in Hiragana and Katakana is essential to benefit from this app.

Best kanji learning aid out there

Clean interface, easy to use, intelligent testing algorithm, pretty much near perfect. Be warned, though: Kanji FLip can be highly addictive! You might not be able to leave it until youve mastered all those kanjis. It gets even more useful when paired with Japanese Flip.

Great for learning Japanese!

This is my favourite app on the iPhone, AND the best program for memorizing kanji Ive ever tried on any platform. You can start with kana, then move on to each grade of kanji in the JLPT. Not multiple choice, so you learn to really remember the correct answer instead of just recognizing it from a list. It trickles in new untested kanji at the rate youre memorizing existing ones, so you eventually learn them all but arent overwhelmed even if you start knowing nothing. Features that would be nice in future versions: - Reverse testing (i.e., show the english translation, guess the kanji) - Ability to create sets & share them online (for class kanji lists) - More stats: (total number of kanji quized in this set, most-wrongly-answered kanji, etc) Also check out Japanese Flip, which is the same thing except for vocab.

Amazing Helpful

This is a great program for those studying for the JLPT or just wanting to learn Kanji. The way the program tracks which characters you know is a big help. There seem to be a few kanji missing from some of the levels and I would love it if there were a few examples for each kanji but these minor things are nothing compared to all the positives. Looks like theyll be addressed in the next version anyway. Definitely worth it.

Makes Learning Fun!

This app makes learning Japanese a joy which is exactly what I needed. If you want to learn Kanji, this app makes way more sense than buying hundreds of paper flash cards for 10 times the price. It keeps track of what Kanji you are good at and which you do not get as quickly and incorporates that into what Kanji to show you next which makes so much sense. I highly recommend this app as well as the similar style app "Japanese Flip" which is the equivalent except that you learn Japanese words rather than just the Kanji on its own (its great because it tests your Kanji knowledge of real word usage, i.e. Kanji combinations. Alternatively, you can look at the hiragana/katakana if you dont recognize the Kanji so you can test your word skills on their own as well).

Needs Audio

This app will be better and more productive by adding voice prompts for the word that is being taught. Like the word "Day", should have a voice prompt to teach how it is said. Then this will be worth the cost even a little more to justify it value in teaching in kanji.

Needs improvement

Overall great for memorizing. I agree with previous reviews that it needs an audio portion for proper pronunciation. I would then give this app a 5 star rating hands down. Hopefully we will see an update in the near future.

Great app

Really useful for practicing kanji. Much more convenient than dragging around a box of cards.

Find something else!

For the amount of money paid, I am not happy with the results. There is no audio, not even for the kana to get you started on pronunciation. There are only two words given for the examples, despite that there may well be 10 different readings, meaning if you wish to memorise the other possible readings you do not even have a word to associate them with, making it very hard (and moreover, pointless) to learn the readings with no examples. These two things are very important so to have them missing on a device that can easily handle such features is a let down. From my short time using the app, just browsing the kana, I also noticed the example for ち was おちゃ -- which is quite odd since really, it is not pronounced ち in that word. That there is also a listing for ちゃ shows that this should not have been an example for ち and leaves me wondering how many other mistakes there are in this app. From browsing through the level 4 kanji I am just so disappointed. Since there are only two examples for each kanji, you would think the developers would make the most of the examples. However, frequently the two examples are taken from the same reading; such as 日 having both of its examples as days of the week. The app also seems to really like showing readings that are irregular in its examples, so for 父 -- where it says its readings are フ and ちち -- its example words happen to be おじさん and おとうさん. Wow. How helpful. This happens A LOT. Or, I will see a kanji that under readings will list multiple examples for only reading, making me interested in what those examples mean... but no such luck, they never tell you those words in the examples. Take 外 ... it shows me the reading/words はず.す and はず.れる as two out of its seven readings, so I get interested in why they not only show はず twice, but what those words mean... its example words, however, are いがい and こうがい -- yet another example of only using one of the six different readings this kanji is presented with. I believe it also has a glitch -- I constantly see the cursor flashing in the text box for some unknown reason, even though I have not clicked the text box. It is extremely distracting and annoying to need to tap to get rid of all the time. I would not have spent my money on this had I been able to preview how it works I wouldve invested my money in something else, possibly more expensive, but a higher quality learning tool. There just has to be something better on the app store for kanji than this.

Great tool for Kanji learners!

Excellent for preparing for the JLPT test. It has a clean interface, is easy to use, and is very reasonably priced.

Pretty good

Its good but I noticed some spelling mistakes and it gives a lot of useless readings Great for review No so good to learn from scratch on Still worth the money

A tremendous value!

For the price, this app is a real bargain. Easy to use and loaded with a huge number of kanji. An excellent resource for serious learners of Japanese who would like language review when having time to kill.

Good idea, still work to do!

The program is very good, the idea is amazing, but still there are some things to be fixed or add. For example to be a good tool to study for the Japanese Tests there should be word examples, so will be easier to for us to remeber. Sometimes in one kanji there are a lot of english word, there should be the Japanese word for all of them, so is easy to know in which words the sound of the kanji changes. I´m looking forward for the new version, the program itsel is very uselful!
